Analysis: NYC Mayor Bloomberg is funding a program called Made in NY to train minority and disadvantaged individuals who wish to obtain a career in film and TV production. It is interesting how the program only trains people for mid level entry jobs and does not provide the training and education opportunities that are required for a high level job in the film and TV production industry.

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/03/03/nc-school-votes-scrap-longstanding-diversity-policy/
Analysis: The North Carolina school system voted to end a program which bused inner city students to suburban schools in order to increase socioeconomic and racial diversity. The program has been in place since 2000 and was successful until the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2007 that race cannot be used as a factor when assigning students to schools. If the school system cancels this program, I wonder if any other action will be taken to increase diversity within the North Carolina school system.

Analysis: UC Berkeley received a large monetary gift for research that will provide an opportunity to research diversity-related topics. This is done in the hopes of gaining skills to master cultural competence. New initiatives include new faculty chairs, scholarships for transfer students, new AC courses, expanding mentoring and career development programs, etc.

ReplyDeleteAnalysis: The Obama administration is looking to investigate schools and see if students within schools are given equal opportunities. This is a response to growing concerns that schools are still segregated and unequal.
I think that this is a great new initiative to work on and I am glad that our current administration is taking this issue seriously. However, I am concerned about what plans will be taken after the investigation is over and how the investigation will be conducted.

Analysis: The City of Greater Bendigo, Australia is holding a week long celebration of Victoria's cultural, linguistic, and religious diversity. The program is being organized by the State Government and will include a series of workshops for primary school children. The celebration reminds me of Black History month in the U.S. because while it is good that minority cultures are being explored, the study of diverse cultures should be celebrated everyday not just for one week or month once a year.

ReplyDeleteAnalysis: In Wake County, North Carolina the school board is looking to end the current diversity policy. Parents are looking to have the schools attended only by children in their neighborhood. The NAACP is calling this out as just another form of desegregation. The author points out that those students in tougher neighborhoods would benefit from going to schools that have better resources. These students need someone there to help them and support them academically. The author also points to not having low expectations of students and that it benefits society to invest in students now than having to pay for possible crimes in the future.

ReplyDeleteAnalysis: An opinion piece about the lack of diversity in Springfield, Missouri. Stating that Springfield is a very white area with few people of color and economic experts are stating that this “homogeneity” will impede prosperity unless people become more welcoming. The author shares a story of a father, whose son was taken out of public schools because other students were harassing him due to his skin color. The author asks parents and people to realize how quickly racism can flourish and is parroted by children. Also states to parents to think before making broad statements about a group of people and talk to their children about what they hear and say.

ReplyDeleteAnalysis: A new study by The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport reveals that the gap between graduation rates of white and black players on NCAA tournament bound men's teams grew this year. While 45 teams graduated 70% of their white players, only 20 teams graduated 70% of their black players. Athletic programs do increase diversity in university sports teams but that diversity needs to be carried over into the academic institutions. There needs to be a connection made between the university and the community which not only encourages athletics but also academics. Furthermore, the academy needs to reflect the knowledges and histories of the community.

Analysis: A report out of Skokie, Illinois indicates that while the diversity of the school district's student population has increased over the past few years, the diversity of the teachers has decreased. Recently there has been outrage over the fact that a popular non white teacher is resigning along with the district's only non white principal. The issue in Skokie is an example of the issue that George Sanchez raises. Despite changing demographics, the academy is increasingly closing its doors to minority students and staff.

ReplyDeleteAnalysis: This article talks about a Calvary church and their effort to integrate different community languages in their service. The church combined the English and Spanish language for the Sunday service. This was difficult and many people were miserable having to participate. People were finding it difficult to follow mass. Many of the churchgoers complained, but the church continued with the bilingual service. The service has now been a shortened and adjusted to fit the needs of both communities. This was done in an effort to bring both communities together not only during mass but also for outside social events. This is an ongoing effort to get the Latino families to participate in activities like weekly prayer groups. Of course English speakers do not want more Spanish in the mass saying that “this is America” and one Spanish speaker stated that he agreed and wanted to be integrated in the community. I found this article interesting because it had never been something that I had considered. This is a growing effort to in churches to reflect the multiculturalism in America. In the article they quoted MLK saying 11 a.m. on Sunday remains "the most segregated hour" in the nation. I had never considered different masses as segregation but just a matter of comfort and convenience, but now I think that it may better serve communities to reach out of their comfort zones. I however did not agree that the Spanish community needed to integrate at the convenience of the English speakers. The English speaking community must also reach out to understand the Spanish speaking community and not look at themselves as the example of what should be expected from the Spanish speakers.

ReplyDeleteIn a University of California report titled "UC's Commitment to Diversity," Mark Yudof talks about new policies that the university must enact in order to offset the budget cuts that threatens to foster diversity at the multiple UC campuses. The article also includes the statistics of each individual college campus and the breakdown of the faculty by ethnicity, which demonstrates that the UC faculty does not even come close to accurately reflecting the demographics of the state of California.
Analysis: With the funding for public education become less available, public universities are now starting to raise tuition fees and accept funds from private corporations in order to conduct research in various fields of interests. The University of California currently faces the risk of becoming a private system since they are now being heavily dependent on the tuition fees from the students and if the tuition increase continues at the rate it is going. The UC becoming privatized means that minorities will no longer have the same opportunities to have access to higher education because the UC will no longer have to be a microcosm of the state. "Students from low-income families, many of whom are from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, may be the most affected by budget cuts," according to Alejandro Delgadillo, associate director of admissions at UC Merced, the decrease in financial aid will further strain the diversity present at the UC campuses. In this report the term "diversity" is seen as an essential factor that must be present in every UC campus in order to have well-rounded students, yet the reality and statistics say otherwise. In fact this year the Latino and African American student population dropped this year when compared to that of last year's student demographics.
http://www.mycentraljersey.com/article/20100328/OPINION02/3280313/-1/newsfront/Verizon-does-its-part-for-diversity
ReplyDeleteIn the news article "Verizon does its part for diversity," written by Magda Vrizarry it discusses the companies that have the most diversity within their employees. This article particularly places a large emphasis on Verizon, which is considered to be in the top four diverse companies due to its training programs that specifically created to help minorities. The article further goes on to mention how Verizon is helping to diversify the business sector in New Jersey by doing business with minority owned businesses.
Analysis: In this article the Verizon Company is praised for having a diverse group of employees, but this article failed to mention the position that most of these minority employees hold and their income. The majority of the executives or any high level positions of Verizon are not occupied by minorities yet this company uses the image of "diversity" to make them more appealing to minority consumers. Therefore, the term "diversity" can be directly linked to the idea of "community" since companies such as Verizon utilize the image of a diverse company to say that they are helping the "community" by training and providing jobs to marginalized communities when in reality all they care about are their own interests. "Our goals around diversity and inclusion have always been to leverage the diversity of employees, customers, suppliers and community partners to better serve our customers. This is increasingly important as globalization kicks into higher gear." According to Vrizarry, more diversity is needed at Verizon with the increase in globalization but doesn't globalization threaten diversity? It is ironic how Verizon is involved in globalization and at the same time is trying to promote the image of a "diverse" company.

ReplyDeleteAnalysis: In this article that was published this month, Tatla predicts that by the year 2031, 31% percent of the Canadian population will be made up of minorities and that in major metropolitan areas minorities will be the majority. Due to the labor shortage and the retirement of baby boomers, Canada will have to rely on China and Indian to meet these demands causing the demographics of the country to drastically change. As the population continues to change with the minority population increasing at a rapid rate Tatla writes that "discrimination and harassment are changing from white against visible minority to one minority group against another." This article was particularly interesting because it illustrates the negative by-products that "diversity" can bring about and how it make the people change about the way in which they look at one another. In this article the term "diversity" is used as a both beneficial and harmful factor, since it brings much needed talent to Canada but at the same time it instills fear into the white-Canadian population. Diversity in this article can therefore be compared to that of a double edged sword capable of bringing changes to Canada but at the cost of having social and political implications. The article ends by emphasizing that in order for companies to be successful in a rapidly changing country they must learn to embrace and tolerate diversity by practicing the idea of equal opportunities for every one.

ReplyDeleteIn this article Fox Entertainment is promoting diversity in the movie industry by saying that they are trying to give minority actors more time and experience on television. The article mainly focuses on the movie Our Family Wedding, which is about a black and Latino couple that want to get married, but are confronted with barriers such as cultural, religious and other differences. The Fox Entertainment group says that movies like these are the ones where minority actors actually get to play the protagonists and are not limited to small roles. It still common to see Latino, Asian and Black actors play minor roles in movies due to the lack of experience in acting. Movies like Our Family Wedding open the doors for rising actors to get their foot in the door of the movie industry since they will now be more likely to appear in other movies. After reading this article I was quite stunned at what I read when I saw Fox Entertainment’s mission statement. The mission statement read accordingly t “We believe our future rests in our collective ability to embrace change and leverage diversity through our leadership, productions, employment, procurement and continued community support.” I couldn’t believe that this was the same corporation that is heavily Republican, biased and includes speakers such as Bill O’ Reilly on their programming, yet their mission statement said they were committed to “diversity.” It is interesting to observe how the term “diversity’ can just be manipulated by large corporations such as Fox to improve their image for the purpose of raising their ratings.
“Dairyland diversity: Immigrant work force growing in Fond du Lac County,” by Jacob Ksuhner.
ReplyDeleteFDL Reporter, March 28, 2010.
http://www.fdlreporter.com/article/20100328/FON0101/3280439/1985/FON
This article discusses how the rural county of Fond du Lac located in Wisconsin is undergoing a dramatic change in the work force since more local residents no longer want to work in the dairy industry. The need for labor in the dairy industry has forced farmers to turn to immigrants to do the work once done by local residents. The immigrant work force has increased 40% when compared to ten years ago and with the coming of more immigrants more diverse communities are beginning to appear. “We need them to milk cows or we’d barely be in business,” said Loren Wolfe, an owner of 575 cows, the opinion of Wolfe reflects the majority of the farmers around this area. However, with the recent economic depression currently at an all time low and with unemployment high, immigrant workers are now being scape-goated and deported. In this article diversity was seen as something negative and unwanted because of the high unemployment rate that creates a discriminatory atmosphere where diversity is not appreciated. While the farmers want the immigrants to stay and work in their farms, others such as legislators fear that the increasing number of immigrants might lead to them having more political power in local and state elections if they are allowed to settle.

ReplyDeleteAnalysis: The department store JCPenny has been listed as one of the top fifty diverse companies in the U.S.. JCPenny is ranked number 46 out of 449 companies.According to the article the key to the store's diversity is its use of "Every Day Matters" brand positioning, intended to generate deeper, more emotionally driven relationships with customers by fully engaging the Company's approximately 150,000 Associates to offer encouragement, provide ideas and inspire customers every time they shop with JCPenney. I wonder how the survey measures diversity? I wonder if it looks at the diversity of its customers and its clients? As a diverse company, I wonder if its CEOs ever attempt to reach out to the surrounding community to encourage participation and diversity?

ReplyDeleteAnalysis: This Washington Post article takes a look as the Racial and ethnic diversity within their own newsroom. They re-iterated the idea the lack of diversity in the newsroom can be harmful to their future as a media source. Although they have about 23% journalists of color, which above the American Society of News Editors census average of 13%, their minority circulation is about 43%. This lack of representation is troublesome and followers are noticing. The Posts circulation is losing Black readers and not gaining Latino or Asian readers. There has to be a shift in who is writing the news so that it is representative not only of the times we live in but also of the population that they are catering to. Greater recruitment must be made to get the best minority writers not only as reporters but in management positions which is currently lacking. The news is being made through the white prism and there has to be greater people of color deciding what should be mentioned and reported.

ReplyDeleteAnalysis: The “recently voted [decision] to end Wake County’s policy of busing and other means to ensure socio-economic diversity in the schools” is in the news again; both Margaret and I had previously blogged about it. This time the state Democratic Party is asking for volunteers to donate their time to fight this decision. There is fear that this decision can be an example for other counties to follow. Although there are no Wake County school board seats up for reelection there are four seats that are up on the Wake County Board of Commissioners, the panel that oversees the school system's budget. I believe this fight could be successful and can be very powerful in showing people that if they put the effort policies that have been placed can be fought against.
10. Entry: http://www1.voanews.com/english/news/usa/Pioneering-US-Supreme-Court-Justice-Wants-More-Women-Diversity-on-Court--90049422.html
ReplyDeleteAnalysis: Retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor spoke at the New York School of Law. She stated given the possibility of Justice John Paul Stevens stepping down this year, that she would like the next appointed judge to be a woman. She believes whether a judge is a woman or man they will both come to the same wise decision. She hopes for more diversity in terms of professional background for future judges; since, “all those now on the Court were nominated when they were serving on lower federal courts.” While O’Connor does bring attention to the issue of having a representative court in terms of gender, she carefully does not mention race or ethnicity. Her use of diversity was in terms of where the judges’ career has been and not the culture or ethnic form which is commonly used. While her comments are progressive and leaning to a more inclusive representation, there must be recognition that far more must be done to have the Courts accurately represent the United States.

ReplyDeleteIn this article the Burger King Corporation is being presented with the 2010 Diversity leader and is praised for making such a commitment fundamental to their business strategy. In my opinion this article failed to mention how Burger King exploits their workers and reaps in huge profits because of the low wages they offer. I found it really interesting how instead of exposing the Burger King Corporation for what it really is instead the authors of this article are celebrating such exploitation of the workers by saying that they are a diverse workforce. The reality is that the Burger King Corporation does not really care about the background of their workers, what really matters to the corporation is that they can get workers who are willing to work full time and for minimum wage. Robert Perkins, vice president of Burger King, says “At Burger King Corp., we celebrate the unique qualities and backgrounds that make each of us different and allow us to be strong contributors in our business as well as in the communities in which we work and live." In this quote Perkins is surely referring to the employees of Burger King that work in the restaurants and not within the actual corporation itself where the number of minority employees drastically becomes reduced.

ReplyDeleteStudents from Arcadia High School participated in the annual “Celebrating Diversity in Arcadia,” exhibition that is hosted by the Ruth and Charles Gilb Arcadia Historical Museum. In this contest the high school students illustrated the diversity of this city in Southern California through drawings, poems and collages. Although the student’s drawings included people from different ethnicities they failed to accurately portray the racial composition of the city of Arcadia. According to the 2000 census, Arcadia is an upper middle class city with a predominantly Asian and White population since together they make up 92% of the city’s population. The high school students made it clear to the author that to them “diversity” means much more than race when they said “Everyone has a different perspective of diversity, It goes beyond the racial topic.” In this quote the high schools are not using the term “diversity” as is often deployed and manipulated by large corporation, instead they claim that diversity includes other aspects such as having different talents, different music and artistic taste. However, it is quite ironic how even though the high school students claim they are not deploying “diversity” as is commonly done, they are at the same time displaying their drawings where different ethnic peoples are present. These high school students celebrate multiculturalism yet they do not display the real social problems that affect certain ethnic communities in this country through their drawings. For example, in the drawing that won the contest it shows a world with different colored hands reaching towards the middle.
http://www.rochestercitynewspaper.com/news/articles/2010/04/EDUCATION-The-color-of-education/
ReplyDeleteIn this article titled “The Color of Education,” Lowan Brown, the diversity recruiter for the district of Rochester, is basically saying how there is a huge demand for colored teachers but there are many obstacles that stand in the way. Brown says that the educational system needs to reflect the changing demographics of the population, but the problem is how to actually get minorities to be qualified for such teaching positions. Increasing the number of minorities in universities around the nation is the first step that can be taken. Another problem that arises is how to attract this limited amount of minority college students into educational programs and how to encourage them to return and help the communities where they come from? Brown insists that the educational system, specifically in urban settings, should be more diversified since “Data from the National Center for Education shows that for the 2007-2008 school year, 71 percent of the nation's teachers were white, 13 percent were Latino, and 12 percent were African American.” If there is no attempt to recruit more minority teachers it will only widen the gap between the community and the public educational system, similar to what George Sanchez was discussing in his essay. The rate at which the educational system is being diversified over time is at an extremely slow rate when compared to the rapidly changing demographics of the nation, which can lead to serious social consequences in the future. In this article the term “diversity” is used as something that is vital to education, but at the same time something really difficult to obtain due to the many obstacles that stand in the way.
http://newsweek.com/thegaggle/archive/2010/04/09/john-paul-stevens-and-diversity-on-the-high-court.aspx
ReplyDeleteIn the article titled “John Paul Steven and Diversity on the High Court,” written by Eleanor Clift , the term “diversity” is used in a much different way as it is accustomed, instead of talking about race the author uses the term to entail different styles of education. The article heavily emphasizes the fact that John Paul Stevens was the only Supreme Court judge to have received an education from a Northwestern law school and not from an Ivy League school. Having a Supreme Court judge that has received his education from the Northwest is very important in introducing diverse opinions to the court whenever decisions are going to be made. Education along with an individual’s life experiences is tremendously important whenever it comes down to making some kind of decision because if all the judges thought alike then the judicial system would not really be fair. Having different opinions and views on certain issues is essential to preventing a bias court from making important decisions that would only favor some people. As Clift says “when they’re lifetime appointments, it’s worth considering educational diversity and the varying life experience that getting a degree from one of the other many fine law schools in the country might bring to the court.”
http://www.presstelegram.com/news/ci_14853713 “Mural Making Diversity Unveiling Saturday”
ReplyDeleteIn the city of Long Beach an artist named Gregory Pickens will put on display a mural that he and many other elementary students have been painting for months. This mural highlights the city of Long Beach’s diversity by including important historical figures from various ethnic groups that have chosen Long Beach as their home. Among these historical figures was Emiliano Zapata, Martin Luther King Jr., Mao Zedong, Emilio Aguinaldo and many more all for the purpose of helping to bring different ethnic communities together. As the author puts it “the theme presents Long Beach as the most diverse city in the nation, and features ancient imagery from diverse cultures to create a tapestry of ancestries.”The mural helps different ethnic groups feel as they are all part of the same community since often times what tends to happen is that certain ethnic groups tend to clump together in one part of the city. Looking at the art work of Pickens reminded me of the large murals that one sees in the mission district of San Francisco, the styles of painting are a bit different but still instill the same message to the local residents. Although these murals with diverse historical leaders serve to bring the community together and celebrate multiculturalism there is no attempt whatsoever to address the social problems that plague such diverse communities. Bringing awareness of social problems such as drugs, gangs, and inaccessible education and health care access would benefit the community more since it would tell the people what the community really needs. In this article the theme of “diversity” is simply being manipulated to enhance the city’s image.

ReplyDeleteAnalysis: This article discusses Supreme Court justice John Paul Stevens' recent announcement that he is stepping down. The article states that Stevens has brought diversity to the court because he is the only justice who received his law degree from a non Ivy League school and he is the only Protestant on the court. The article also claims that because the U.S. has overcome so many hurdles in regards to race, religion, and ethnicity, now whenever a new justice is selected, the only issue that needs to be considered is whether the justice is liberal or conservative. This is not a valid claim considering that there are many issues regarding race and religion that still need to be resolved. Also, the composition of the court is not very diverse considering that there are only two women on the court and there are only two people of color on the court.

Acting deputy assistant commissioner Shabir Hussain left in February after "unsuccessfully suing the force for racial discrimination." The article claims that the reason for the lack of diversity is poor management. However, the real issue is what can be done to ensure that individuals of diverse backgrounds are provided with the education opportunities to gain employment in Scotland Yard. This also demonstrates that the issue of increasing diversity in the workplace is a global issue.

ReplyDeleteAnalysis: On 4/10/10 at 10:30 in Long Beach,CA a mural was unveiled depicting the diversity of Long Beach. The artist Gregory Pickens, worked with the Long Beach Art Exchange Youth Art Education to complete the mural. The mural is entitled `Ancient Diverse Similarities,' and depicts "ancient imagery from diverse cultures to create a tapestry of ancestries." The point of the mural is to present Long Beach as the most diverse city in the nation. The mural surrounds a 1.1 acre lot which between 2004-2007 was the site of 150 violent crimes. It is good that the city is attempting to replace its image of crime and decadence by embracing and celebrating its diversity. Also, it is an example of crossing the border because the artist engaged with youth from the city in order to improve the community as a whole.

ReplyDeleteAnalysis: This weekend, the St. Norbet College held the Wisconsin Private College Initiative for Diversity Conference. On Friday, only fifty people attended the conference and only eighty people were expected to attend today. The activities include a series of workshops,a dinner, cultural trivia and a viewing of the documentary "Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes." The conference is a good idea because it encourages diversity. However, it seems that most of the conference's attendants were white. While it's good that white people want to be involved in the conference, it's more important for people of color and diverse ethnic backgrounds to be involved in the process of increasing diversity. Otherwise, the process becomes exclusive and alienating.
